Gone are the days of telling an enthusiastic child that their dream of being an Olympic figure skater is out because there’s no rink nearby.
While many childhood skating dreams may fade, there’s no doubt that today’s champions figure skaters all started at an early age. Recent Olympic ice dancing champions, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir started when they were 5 and 7 years old respectively. Scott’s mother and aunt owned an ice rink back in the day and naturally, Scott and his two older brothers spent all their after-school hours at the rink watching others being taught and trained. Before long, the boys took to the ice and the rest is history. After 22 years of perfecting their skill, twice Olympic champions, Scott and Tessa retired from competitive skating. That says that figure skating skill takes time to perfect. There must be many more potential champions who never could aspire to the ice for lack of convenient training facilities.
